Pros and cons of inflatable kayaks: the four things you should know before getting started
Are you approaching the world of water sports for the first time and are unsure what to choose between an inflatable kayak and a rigid one?
That's completely normal, for each solution has its own advantages and disadvantages. Small spoiler though… those individuals who start from scratch usually choose the inflatable kayak!
How come? Let's explore it together!
INFLATABLE KAYAK: LIGHTER AND EASIER TO TRANSPORT
The first aspect, or rather, two aspects, which usually make the inflatable kayak more favourable are weight and transport.
Compared to the rigid solution, in fact, the inflatable kayak has a decidedly lower weight and, thanks to its softness, it can be easily closed inside its backpack and transported comfortably in the trunk of the car - but also on a scooter, bicycle, or on foot, should there be a particular necessity.
In most cases, moreover, the kayak can be inflated in just a few minutes by means of a manual or pedal-based pump, even though the best option here is the electric inflator: the latter option also has a built-in pressure regulator, which allows you always to have the boat inflated to the right point.
INFLATABLE KAYAK: SAFEST OPTION FOR BEGINNERS
Another aspect to take into account is obviously safety: it may seem like a paradox, but the inflatable kayak is safer than the rigid one if you have no navigation experience, because in the event of a capsize you can easily turn it over and get back on it. With the rigid kayak, this becomes much more complicated.
In addition, in the event of accidental impacts or blows - which can happen frequently when you are a beginner - the inflatable kayak is able to better cushion the blows so as to avoid getting scratched or chipped, as would normally happen with the rigid one. Of course, this always depends on the severity of the impact!
INFLATABLE KAYAK: IF SPEED IS WHAT YOU ARE AFTER, CHOOSE THE RIGID OPTION!
If you are after a kayak which appropriately satisfies your thirst for speed, then the rigid one is what's right for you: the latter allows you to cover many more kilometers per single navigation, while the inflatable one is more suitable for going not too far offshore or navigating flat waters - such as those of a lake, for example.
But remember: this is actually a valid reason to choose the inflatable kayak at the beginning of your experience, to practice, so as not to run excessive risks related to speed or capsizing.
INFLATABLE KAYAK: MORE COST-EFFECTIVE THAN THE RIGID MODEL
Even when it comes to sheer economics, the inflatable kayak is more advantageous than the rigid solution. Be careful, however: this does not mean that it is less durable, because nowadays the technologies of the materials with which they are made have reached extremely high levels, ensuring very good longevity.
The only addition to the price of the kayak is its inflator, but here too, depending on the solution you decide to choose (manual, pedal or electric), there are options for all tastes and budgets!
